After Dark Convo

So tonight I walked a few blocks from my home to attend Deanwood Deli Karaoke Night and I know you want to know what it is but before I tell you I am going to first explain how this all came to be.

I’ve lived in Deanwood since I was young, well at least my family, who has a long history in Deanwood. Throughout my life I’ve seen businesses come and go in my neighborhood. After many years of not having anything within walking distance, word started to spread that we would finally have a carry out in the neighborhood which would be so great because the closest carryout is on Minnesota Avenue. And if you never walked to Minnesota Avenue then you wouldn’t know how exhausting it can be and yes , you can take the U4 but that’s only if it would show up on Sheriff Road. I like to say that it’s the bus with the shortest route but the longest wait.

Fast forward to when the old fish carryout became Deanwood Deli I remember walking down the street just to make sure it was actually happening because I didn’t believe it. Of course I went to the grand opening and I remember walking home and once inside I sat on my couch and cried happy tears and ever since I have been hooked and it’s to the point that my co workers at my job know where I’m going for lunch but it also doesn’t help that my job is two blocks from it.

I work at Cannabliss Dispensary as a bud tender and we get a lot of visitors from all over the States including a few foreigners and they will always ask where can they go to get food and of course I tell them Deanwood Deli but I’m not sure how many of them or if any have taken my recommendation.

Fast forward two months later I’m inside Deanwood Deli and the owner Ty mentions about having karaoke night on Wednesdays which I was skeptical and again I didn’t believe he would do it because there had been so many promises made to this community and nothing ever happened. I did side eye him because I was not a believer.

A month later I’m attending my first Deanwood Deli Karaoke Night and at first I was unsure about the crowd because I didn’t know anyone and I really don’t do well in crowds but they welcomed me & ever since that first night I have been going to Karaoke Night every Wednesday.

I feel safe, comfortable and protected at Karaoke Night, I am able to relax and not worry about having to deal with aggressive men or behavior. So let that sink in for a moment because how often do you hear someone say that about a business, not often. Although I’m going to have to figure out a better solution to getting home but I do make it home safely every Wednesday. Ty has worked hard to make the event safe not just for women but everyone. I am a believer.

Now he has those who are opposed to what he is doing but he is continuing the event every Wednesday from 6pm-10pm. I am just wondering what those that do oppose the event would rather for him to do( it is a rhetorical question not to be answered). Ty is giving back to this neighborhood and obviously he is getting recognition because he was just awarded CBE Bussiness Of Year Award in DC.

I’m going to say my final thoughts and leave it where it is. Thank you Ty for bringing your carryout to my neighborhood and for giving us women a safe place to enjoy ourselves on a Wednesday night and also for having the best damn wings in DC(don’t argue with me, argue with yourself) and I can’t help but talk about their BLT sandwich which is so damn delicious. For those who are subscribed to my blog then you know my fondness for Deanwood Deli I talk about them often.

I have a bestie who because of an injury she suffered a few years ago don’t get out that often and I started bringing her to karaoke night and she really enjoys herself for a few hours.

I know you still maybe wondering what karaoke night really is and this is what it is, it’s where the grown folks go to eat, drink and sing songs and no one judges you. It is a judgement free safe place for those who need a break from the chaos of city life. Again this is my own personal opinion and we will agree to disagree. PERIOD!

And I just hope that one Wednesday karaoke night I will be able to sing a Taylor Swift song because I’m a Swiftie fan. I get asked all the time what song I want to sing along too. A Tay-Tay song would get me really singing & showing off. Although I know Tay-Tay isn’t for everyone but just know I have been practicing for that one night that I breakout singing Tays music but until then I will continue to practice at my job which I put on an entire Tay-Tay performance for my coworkers.
