The POW WOW dancer & his grandparents
POW WOW Dancer
This past Saturday I was able to enjoy two very good performances at the Kennedy Center. The first performance was in the main hall on the Millennium Stage The Halluci Nation the deejay name is Tim “2oolman” Hill of A Tribe Called Red it was to celebrate Native American Indian Heritage as the deejay was playing they had Native Indians dancing in beautiful clothing very colorful. The music had everyone dancing even I was grooving to the beats. I wasn’t familiar with the group or the music so I looked them up on Instagram. They do travel and perform their music which will have you moving & dancing. Until Saturday I didn’t know who they were but now I do & so does everyone else including my followers & readers. And hopefully I will get to see them perform once again when they return to DC.
I think what people forget is that Native American Indians & Africans were the first dancers & I have both running through my veins. I’m not sure which tribe my family belongs too but I’m curious to find out which Native American Indian tribe. I do know the Native American Indian blood runs thick on my mom side of the family. I remember the stories she would tell me of my great great grandmother who was of Indian descent. I remember when I was young & my mom having long hair past her butt & me brushing her hair. Then her one day telling me she was going to cut it & me crying and begging her not too but she did donate it to a organization that made wigs for cancer patients so I was okay. I often wonder about who is wearing my moms hair. It took me some time to get use to her new length.
Then there was a young boy who was dressed in native clothing beautifully designed and he danced for the crowd. This young boy blew my mind of his dancing talents I was able to talk to his dad for a moment before I had to rush off to see the concert & what I was told he performs at many POW WOW’s and different shows and that his outfits are handmade.[ Side Note: I did not get his name & as I continue to blog & do interviews I will get better but if his dad is reading this if you can let me know his name & his grandparents name so I can include it.]
I then attended a jazz concert called Cecile McLorin Salvant Ogresse which was different than I had ever heard before but it was enjoyable and entertaining. The jazz singer Cecile Salvant told a story through song & music she has a beautiful unique voice. Some of the words were sung in French. In her bio it said she wrote the story, lyrics, and music so as I could understand it was about a woman, a creature and getting lost in the forest and being eaten. I can’t wait to see her perform again & I recommend seeing her live. I wonder what story she will tell next.
